Although the title of this post is Spiritual Awakening – So Simple, I do not mean to imply “easy”. I am yet to find any evidence from anyone who has announced that they have spiritually awakened that they found it the slightest bit easy. Quite the contrary. The literature of the spiritually awakened is full of stories of difficulty, hardship, self-sacrifice, chronic illness, near death experiences, years and years of travelling through India and elsewhere searching for that enlightened guru that will assist awakening. So while this article suggests that the moment of awakening is a simple step, obvious in retrospect, getting to that point of awakening is by no means easy.
I am The Light, and The Light is All, and The Light is I
I recall the moment of my spiritual awakening. A moment before I found myself having an experience similar to thousands of previous experiences. I was surrounded by Light (in this particular case The Light was experienced as Limitless Love). Intellectually, I knew I was The Light. I even felt I was The Light. Literally thousands of times I had expanded in The Light, as The Light, “I am The Light, and The Light is All, and The Light is I”. And yet, on this occasion of my spiritual awakening, it was different.
Who Is The Experiencer?
The evening before my spiritual awakening, Jan was assisting me to awaken and she had asked me, “What are you experiencing”? I explained to her what I was experiencing. Then Jan asked me a question that can be found toward the end of Eckhart Tolle’s book, “A New Earth“, “Who is the experiencer?” And I could see and feel my sense of “I”. I followed this “I” through my mind-scape until I found myself surrounded by Limitless Love.
Who Creates Our Reality?
Just then chaos erupted. A mosquito landed on my nose. A neighbor’s dog barked. We live among tall trees and a flock of squawking native parrots decided to land in them and create cacophony. The timing was perfect for distracting me. I knew the distractions were created by me, by some part of me that, for some reason, did not want to take the next step into enlightenment. So we stopped the exercise of awakening me for the evening.
Self Realization
The next morning, while Jan was still sleeping, I repeated the exercise in my morning meditation. Once again I followed the sense of “I” into Limitless Love. Surrounded by Limitless Love I asked myself the question, “Who is the experiencer?” Suddenly I became that love. I realized myself as Limitless Love. Spiritual awakening,
Spiritual Awakening – So Simple
“It is so simple“, I thought. I couldn’t believe how simple it seemed. It was just a thought away from the previous unawakened state I had been experiencing. It was so simple, I wondered how I could not have thought that before. Yes it was so simple, yet the journey to that point of spiritual awakening had been particularly difficult.
Subsequently, I have read about many others who have awakened. Some of them say similar things, that their journey to enlightenment had been difficult but the moment of spiritual awakening was so simple. Below are quotes from some of these people.

I sat with my hands in front of me and closed my eyes. Some time passed. I am not aware of how much. I don’t think it was so long. I opened my eyes, and I looked at the flow of the Ganga, at the sky. A few birds were there. I looked to Him. Then I just uttered, “Oh! it’s so simple.”
